Built 1870 This home was built by Jim Mathis and the Poling Family for Bill Pittman. The one and a half story house has a small front porch and a cellar in the rear part of the house. Hand-hewn Brown County stones form the cellar walls and part of the floor. The house was originally heated by wood stoves. Three chimneys were taken out when electric heat was installed. The Tilton family purchased the property in 1888. James Tilton, Jimmie as he was called, was Director of the Nashville State Bank three years after it was founded and became its president in 1911. He held this office until he died at age 99. The Tiltons were a musical family and often went across the street to play and sing with the Hoppers. (Information
