Dean, Executive Director There are stories to be told, there are experiences to share, there are differences to be made in a young person's life. Growing up can be difficult and even painful at times. Add to it additional difficulties and a child may soon lose the joy and privilege of just being a child all the simple things that make childhood that mystical experience that it is. That's where you come in. You may be able to provide that extra support, that needed smile, that nod of encouragement to help a child recapture that spark that makes a child's face glow. it's all up to you - the future begins now. "Our work is as elementary as putting a friend in a child's life, and as essential as putting hope into a child's future." Founded in 1978, Brown County Big Brothers Big Sisters has served over 250 at-risk children. Most of these children, or "Littles" come from single parent homes in Brown County. They are matched with caring adults from the area who take them under their wing as a friend. They do not act as a substitute parent or baby-sitter but join in activities that friends share. The "Bigs," who do not have to reside in Brown County, are matched with a child who enjoys the same activities as they do. Whether it be fishing, board games, movies, bowling or whatever, it requires a commitment. It takes consistent time every other week so the child can learn to trust an adult to be his or her friend. The child's self-esteem increases through the knowledge that a non-related adult genuinely cares for them. Horizons for the future are broadened by someone willing to take the time to be a role model and work hard with the child to overcome challenges. All this is done in the context of getting to know one another while having fun doing so. As one volunteer put it, "I joined to make a difference in a child's life, but sometimes I htink I get more out of it than he does." Another volunteer said, "I wish I had done this a long time ago." Big Brothers Big Sisters is the largest, oldest and most successful mentoring program in the world! The adult volunteers are carefully screened and interviewed by the Executive Director. The commitment usually consists of 2 to 4 hours every other week to make a difference in a "Little's" life. The program is supported by fundraising efforts of the Board of Directors, grants, and community and individual donations. It is not a United Way funded program. Our biggest current fundraisers are the Golf Tournament in June; Uncork the Magic Wine Tasting Gourmet Dinner Event in January; and Pretzel Sales on weekends in October. A recent study conducted by a respected national research firm examined the effect of BBBS mentoring on youth and found that "Littles" who met with their "Bigs" regularly were 46% less likely to start using drugs or alcohol; 52% less likely to skip a day of school; 1/3 less likely to hit someone; and more trusting of their parents or guardians. Put hope into a child's future volunteer today!!!! |
